Operational Excellence 2010
Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. (KMP) is a leading pipeline transportation and energy storage company in North America. We own an interest in or operate approximately 28,000 miles of pipelines and 180 terminals. Our pipelines transport natural gas, gasoline, crude oil, CO2 and other products, and our terminals store petroleum products and chemicals and handle bulk materials like coal and petroleum coke. We are also the leading provider of CO2 for enhanced oil recovery projects in North America.
Kinder Morgan is committed to being a good corporate citizen, employing responsible business practices and conducting ourselves in an ethical manner. Toward that end, we spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year on integrity management programs and maintenance, as we are dedicated to protecting the public, the environment, our employees and contractors. Highlighted below are some of our 2010 achievements.
- We continued to outperform the industry averages in virtually all categories related to safety and environmental performance measures. Because we are committed to transparency, this information is available on our web site.
- Kinder Morgan received the prestigious Alberta Emerald Award for the Anchor Loop project on the Trans Mountain pipeline system in Canada. This award recognizes leading and tangible benefits to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
- Our Argo, Ill., terminal, which is in the middle of the U.S. corn belt, began handling biodiesel. Combined, petroleum distributors in Illinois blend more biodiesel than those in any other state.
- We increased ethanol blending at our Selma, N.C., terminal and began handling the product at our Richmond, Calif., terminal. Kinder Morgan now handles about one out of every three barrels of ethanol used in the United States.
- After undergoing a rigorous re-certification process, our Sanford, N.C., terminal received the Carolina Star from the North Carolina Department of Labor. This award recognized the terminal’s achievements and continuous improvement in workplace safety.
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency selected Kinder Morgan as the Natural Gas STAR Program’s Transmission Partner of the Year. The program recognizes our reduction of methane emission and implementation of a variety of technologies and practices.
- Our Rockies Express Pipeline received commendations from the governors of Colorado, Indiana and Nebraska. These states recognized our economic contributions and the pipeline’s role in the nation’s energy future.
- The mayor of Carteret, N.J., praised our local terminal’s “Gateway” redevelopment project for creating construction jobs, and future long-term shipping and operations positions.
- Employees at our Watson Station in Carson, Calif., received an award for their dedication to security from the Pipeline Security Division of the Transportation Safety Administration. The award recognizes employees for diligently implementing and managing the station’s security program.
- We expanded distribution of The Responder, our pipeline information newsletter for emergency responders and public officials. We sent four issues to more than 1,700 recipients.
- We conducted tours of many of our facilities with emergency responders to help them understand our operations. Attendees learned about the various products we handle and what to be aware of if they are needed to respond to an emergency.
- In partnership with the Common Ground Alliance, one of our storage tanks in Carson, Calif., displays “811. Know what’s below. Call before you dig.” Third-party strikes are one of the leading causes of pipeline incidents and we plan to use our storage tanks to display this safety message in other communities.
- The Kinder Morgan Foundation made more than $1 million in grants to youth organizations. Our donations supported education, arts and science programs.
- Two of our Wildlife Habitat Council (WHC) projects—the Geismar Logistics Terminal in Geismar, La., and the Raft River project near Clearwater, British Columbia—received international recognition at the organization’s annual symposium. WHC also awarded Wildlife at Work certification to four of our terminals in Louisiana. Kinder Morgan now has 10 projects certified by the WHC.
- We reduced our impact on the environment and saved unitholders’ money by not printing and mailing an annual report. Instead, we posted our chairman’s letter and our Form 10-K on our web site.
- Kinder Morgan’s Rockies Express Pipeline joined several other companies in funding the 12,089-acre Vinton Furnace State Experimental Forest and the neighboring 3,405-acre Vinton Furnace State Wildlife Area in Ohio. The conservation areas represent a rare, contiguous block of forestland that is home to many native plants and wildlife, including a number of endangered species.
- With the help of students, Kinder Morgan replanted native vegetation at Stoney Creek Community School in Burnaby, British Columbia. The school is adjacent to Stoney Creek, an urban stream that is undergoing restoration.
- We hosted a workshop at our Geismar, La., terminal for students in Louisiana State University’s XCITE program. The pre-college program introduces engineering to promising female students in ninth and tenth grades.
- Our major natural gas pipeline projects donated 1,750 small trees to students at four schools in Gahanna, Ohio, office supplies and furniture to United Way of Fairfield County in Lancaster, Ohio, and surplus construction materials to Bertrand High School in Nebraska and the Louisiana Technical College.
- Kinder Morgan participated in Simon Fraser University’s Leadership Exchange Program in British Columbia. The program strives to build mutual trust and collaboration between First Nations and business.
- We support a local high school work-study program in Houston, Texas, that provides low-income students with valuable work experience. Through the program, four students spend one day a week in our office to fill a full-time, entry-level position.
- More than 150 students recently helped Kinder Morgan and the Elizabeth River Project plant native grasses on a five-acre wetland at the company’s Elizabeth River Terminal in Virginia. The students grew the grasses in their classrooms over the winter.
- Our Calgary, Alberta, office won a Spirits of Gold award from United Way of Calgary and Area. The award recognizes companies that achieve 75 percent participation in their pledge drive and average $65 per donor gift.
