The Stoney Creek Stewardship Project

In April and May of 2007, Kinder Morgan employees and other members of SCEWG removed woody debris and refuse from the creek which had accumulated there due to the previous winter’s storms. This allowed for easier movement/access for fish. Additional slope work and relocation of some of this woody debris along the banks enhanced the aquatic habitat by providing shade and cover for fish. Garbage was also removed from the area.
In addition, the invasive Himalayan blackberry plant was eradicated from the banks of Stoney Creek, with new native plants and trees planted in its place. SCEWG members and Kinder Morgan staff maintained and monitored the area and watered the plants and removed weeds for the next year. Since this time the SCEWG and Kinder Morgan has and will continue to monitor the site and remove any new invasives from the area in order to ensure the continued success of the native species.
To recognize Kinder Morgan and the Stoney Creek Environmental Working Group for their efforts, the Wildlife Habitat Council, (a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and conservation of wildlife habitat), awarded a Corporate Wildlife Habitat Certification for the success of this project. This International Certification recognizes active voluntary wildlife habitat management and enhancement programs that provide benefits to native wildlife and augment the biodiversity of the area.
